Hardware-level protection for your digital assets
Simple companion app for all your crypto needs
Support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many more
Managing digital assets should feel safe, simple, and empowering. This guide will walk you step-by-step through setting up your new hardware wallet, securing your recovery phrase, installing the companion app, and making your first crypto transactions with confidence. Whether you're brand new to digital assets or upgrading to hardware-level protection, you're in the right place.
When you unbox your device, you should find the following items:
Security Check
Before proceeding, verify the device has not been tampered with. The wallet should arrive sealed and unused. If anything appears damaged or suspicious, contact support before continuing.
Your device should never come with a pre-written recovery phrase—if it does, do not use it.
Connect your device with the supplied USB cable and power it on. You'll be presented with two options:
Choose this if this is your first hardware wallet or you want a brand new recovery phrase generated.
Pick this if you already have a recovery phrase from a previous Ledger device or a compatible wallet.
Your device will then ask you to create a secure PIN. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized access.
Important: Avoid simple combinations like "0000" or "1234." If the wrong PIN is entered too many times, the device will reset itself as a security measure.
This step is the foundation of your wallet security. Your Ledger device will display a 24-word (or sometimes 12-word) recovery phrase. These words are your master key to your digital assets.
Your recovery phrase is the only way to restore your wallet if your device is lost or damaged.
To manage your assets, install the official companion application from the manufacturer. The app lets you install blockchain apps, manage accounts, send and receive crypto, view your portfolio, and keep your device updated.
Always download it from the official website or trusted app stores.
After installation, open the app on your computer or mobile phone. Then:
Connect your Ledger device using USB or Bluetooth
Unlock the device with your PIN
Follow the on-screen instructions to verify authenticity
Your Ledger can support many blockchains, but each requires its own app installed on the device. Some common examples include:
Installing each app only takes a few seconds and enables you to add accounts for that asset inside the companion app.
In the companion app, go to "Add Account." For each cryptocurrency:
Select the blockchain
Connect and unlock your device
Confirm account creation on the device screen
Your new account will then appear on your portfolio dashboard.
To receive assets:
Open the companion app
Select "Receive" for the chosen account
Connect and unlock your device
Verify the address displayed on the device matches the one on the app
Share or copy the address and receive funds
Always verify addresses on the device screen to stay protected from potential malware.
Sending funds is just as simple. Enter the destination address, amount, and fees in the app, then confirm the transaction on your device.
Your Ledger will not allow a transaction unless you physically approve it, ensuring strong protection against unauthorized access.
Firmware updates improve security and add new features. Only update your device through the companion app. Never download firmware from any other source.
You will never need to enter your recovery phrase during a normal update—only during a restoration.
Your Ledger device is now fully set up and ready to protect your digital assets. With secure offline storage, verified transactions, and complete ownership of your private keys, you can confidently explore crypto, DeFi, NFTs, and more.
